Each year 1 child out of every 100 is born with congenital heart disease in the United States. Many of these children will need life saving surgery within their first days to weeks of life.
Without the major technological and medical advances the vast majority of these children could not survive. For most congenital heart diseases that used to be universally fatal, survival now approaches 99%.
